Northern Ireland Construction Students build a Bright future at WorldSkills UK National Finals

14 local construction students recently represented local colleges, training providers and employers at WorldSkills UK Live competition, Edinburgh College. The competition awarded the national champion in their occupational skill. The team achieved 6 medals (2 Gold, 2 Silver, 2 Bronze) and 2 Highly Commended Awards meaning that Northern Ireland are ranked 2nd in the UK Regions, moving up from 4th last year.


The national finals of this UK competitions saw more than 500 competitors battle it out in 60 different disciplines at seven venues across the UK. Winners will get an opportunity  to compete for a place in Team UK at WorldSkills, Lyon, France 2024.
Competitors gained their place in these prestigious finals by competing in their respective local Inter College Campus Competitions and then the SkillBuild NI Regional Finals held at CITB NI earlier this year, May 2022.
Supported by the Department for the Economy, local construction companies and sponsors, the competition provides an opportunity to showcase the high level of skills and the impressive talent within the workforce, as well as raising the status and standards of professional and technical education and training.
Barry Neilson, Chief Executive, CITB NI said,

“Huge congratulations to all the competitors, it is an achievement in itself to compete at this level and be ambassadors for the colleges, employers and their trades. Our young people are very resilient and to compete at this national level is exceptional, especially with all the disruptions and difficulties they have faced in recent years.

Barry added.

It is a fantastic achievement that 6 medals and 2 highly commended awards came back to Northern Ireland, this is great news for the competitors the colleges and the local training network.

Special mention must go to Southern Regional College who topped the leaderboard as the highest ranked college winning the most medals and awards in the competition across all trades and disciplines.”

Plans are now in place for the 2023 SkillBuild NI Inter Campus competitions, February/March and the SkillBuild NI Regional Finals which will be held in North West Regional College, Greystone, Limavady, 16 May 2023.
