New Consultation - Proposals on the alignment of H&S Regulations with the EU direct acting CLP Regul

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (“the Executive”) has prepared a Consultative Document containing proposals to align domestic Regulations with the European Union direct acting Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (the CLP Regulation).

The CLP Regulation, which implements in the EU the United Nations Globally Harmonised System (GHS) on the classification and labelling of chemicals, comes fully into force in June 2015. An amending directive (2014/27/EU) with a transposition deadline on 1 June 2015 has been adopted which updates five health and safety directives to reflect CLP.

As a result, amendments need to be made to relevant health and safety regulations in Northern Ireland to replace references to the existing classification system and hazard warning symbols with CLP references. In addition, consequential amendments also need to be made to a range of domestic regulations to align them with CLP.

Further details regarding the proposed Regulations are set out in the consultative document.
