Leaders in Construction – the future for the industry

Representatives of the construction industry met today to help CITB NI to develop a leadership programme, ‘Leader in Construction’, for emerging leaders in the local construction industry. The group included representatives from a range of companies both large and small to reflect the intended participants of the programme. Key to the discussions were the type of leadership capabilities required for senior managers and owner / operators in the construction industry of the future.

This substantially-funded pilot leadership development programme is suitable for those next in line for a senior management position, or with the potential to become senior managers, within local NI construction businesses. No formal qualifications are required for entry and the programme is designed to be equally suitable for high potential candidates from both large organisations and family businesses.

The programme is  tailored to the construction sector and will assist the industry to meet current and future challenges. It will develop the strategic and leadership behaviours required at a senior level no matter whether a small or family run business or a large multi-national and will help build managerial capability within participating companies and individuals.

Companies will benefit from leaders equipped with the skills to increase sales and market share, analyse environmental conditions and set strategic direction with better connections both locally and at European level.

Participants will develop the ability to deliver improved results, respond strategically to an ever-changing environment, manage significant budgets and complex projects. They will create a plan for their future career and for the businesses they operate in.

Leader in Construction’ will be of equal benefit to those who entered the industry as technical graduates, those who entered at craft level and have moved to a management position, and those who entered as family members of owner / operator businesses. The programme includes 360° assessment, practical workshops, coaching and a two-day European study visit.

Barry Neilson, Chief Executive, CITB NI said, ‘The construction industry has suffered from poor press coverage and a lowering of the perception of what it is to be a construction professional. It is time for us to build a new image of our sector - to build an image of professionalism, competence and quality. Strong leadership and management skills are vital to this and to achieving sustained economic growth. The construction industry is starting to show signs of economic improvement and businesses need to be able to respond effectively to the ever changing needs of the sector. This programme will help individuals and companies to develop leadership skills which in turn will help develop the leadership quality within the industry as a whole.”

Leader in Construction’ will be launched in December 2015 and is expected to commence in February 2016.
