Health and Safety Resources to support the local construction industry
CITB NI are focused on driving investment in skills and training that a growing construction sector requires and offer key initiatives to help the industry train. There is a focus on Health and Safety resources to help support, help and guide the construction industry.
Health and Safety Booklets
CITB NI have produced a suite of health and safety booklets on 14 occupational areas ranging from bricklaying to wall & floor tiling. These publications are easy to download from the publications section of the CITB NI website https://www.citbni.org.uk/CITB-NI-Publications.aspx
Each booklet covers the essential health and safety requirements for the occupation and details health and safety lawand and training qualifications. The booklet also takes account of the essential health and safety topics of working at heights, asbestos, dust, noise, PPE and first aid.
Health & Safety Blueprint
The Health and Safety Blueprint illustrates the training requirements needed for over seventy occupational areas within the construction industry ranging from appointed lifting operations to wood preserver and also includes office, facilities and driving occupations. The Health & Safety Blueprint is also available for download from https://www.citbni.org.k/CITB-NI-Publications.aspx and provides a guide to identify Health & Safety training needs and help eliminate and reduce risks of accidents, injury and ill-health within the construction workplace.
Online Training Guides
At present the Mobile Training Unit is not operational on sites due to COVID-19 restrictions. Our team have provided taster videos on the CITB NI website on key topics such as Display Screen Equipment, Noise at Work, Fire Prevention & Control and Asbestos Awareness. These taster guides provide the key essential information needed in these areas.
We have also produced longer videos based on our employer engagement events. These include BIM, GDPR & Data Protection and CITB NI Products and Services.
All of the videos can be found at https://www.citbni.org.uk/Training/Online-Training.aspx
CITB NI Grants
The CITB NI training grant scheme offers direct grants to registered employers to support a wide range of training and qualifications for employees working in Northern Ireland which includes a broad range of health and safety courses. The training is not limited to just the construction trades, it also includes Administration, Supervision and Management training. The training grant funds are easy to claim, with employers encouraged to claim online via the website www.citbni.org.uk.
Barry Neilson, Chief Executive, CITB NI said, “Construction is vital to the economy and many construction companies are now fully operational on site with appropriate restrictions and safety measures in place. It has been a tough year and there are still tough times ahead. Investing in skills and qualifications to improve safety is part of CITB NI’s strategic direction with health and safety high up the list of industry priorities. We encourage our industry to continue to prioritise the health and safety of their workforce, train and develop the skills of their people to help overcome challenges, learn more and become stronger. Our Grant scheme and training programmes are widely recognised within the industry and we want to continue to provide both training and financial support for employers. Resources such as the Health & Safety Booklets and Blueprint are easy to download from our website and we encourage the industry to utilise them. CITB NI is committed to continuing to provide additional support, advice and guidance to local construction employers during these challenging times.”
Moving forward CITB NI will continue to focus on providing the support and services needed to ensure local businesses have the right skills to deliver quality. Through a mix of grant funding and direct training interventions CITB NI will help develop the workforce to meet client needs and grow their business
