Claim FREE construction NVQ now before it is too late

Time is of the essence for construction workers currently working in the industry who want to claim their Free NVQ through the ‘Qualifying the Existing Workforce’ Project.
The  second phase of the ‘Qualifying the Existing Workforce’ project was launched last year to qualify 1000 currently unqualified, experienced, employed construction workers to NVQ Level 2, helping to increase productivity and meet the industry’s skills challenge.

The project is a joint initiative between CITB NI and the Joint Council for the Building and Civil Engineering Industry and is funded by the Department for Employment and Learning.

The project closes in February 2016 and  qualifications are being claimed on a steady basis, changes in Government funding will mean the qualifications are likely to only be partially funded in the future so that candidates will have to contribute towards the cost themselves.

Barry Fegan, a piling rig attendant with Bullivant Tarranto has successfully achieved NVQ Level 2 in piling rig operations.  Since Barry has completed this qualification it has been a major stepping stone to a competence card which allows him to operate on sites that he previously would not have been able to work on. The qualification and card prove to contractors that Barry has the relevant skills and experience to carry out his role successfully

Barry said, “I was delighted to achieve my qualification especially as it is an area I have been working on for a number of years. The assessor was experienced in this field and had a down to earth approach to the qualification. I would recommend the ‘Qualifying the Existing Workforce’ programme to anyone because the knowledge of the job helps gain the qualification.”

Barry Neilson, Chief Executive, CITB NI said. “It is encouraging that the ‘Qualifying the Existing Workforce Project’ has been so successful and construction workers are eager to claim their free NVQ. Our research shows that the economy is turning the corner and the NI construction industry will benefit from that. It is therefore essential that we identify and address the skills and training needs of the workforce necessary for the long term future of the sector. We encourage construction workers to sign up and claim their free training not only to help themselves but also the local industry.”

Nine assessment centres have been awarded the contract to qualify and assess the candidates across the Province. There are 45 occupations available ranging from bricklaying to wall and floor tiling and including occupations new to the project this year such as asbestos removal, hire and rental and roofing.
