CITB NI working with industry to help identify future construction apprenticeship needs

CITB NI is working in partnership with industry employer representatives, training providers and the Department for the Economy to focus on the structure, format and standard of construction apprenticeship training now and in the future.

Working collectively as the Built Environment Sector Partnership (BESP) the partners work together to ensure that construction apprenticeships meet the needs of employers, have sufficient breadth to support portability and build capacity for apprenticeships and youth training within the construction sector.

The main focus of the BESP is the review of existing apprenticeship frameworks which cover all the statutory requirements for an Apprenticeship programme and are developed to ensure that all apprenticeship programmes are delivered and measured consistently.

Currently 17 Apprenticeship Frameworks are being reviewed by the partnership including. Carpentry & Joinery, Bricklaying, Painting & Decorating, Electrical Installation and Fire & Security .

As each apprenticeship framework is reviewed or developed, industry will be consulted to ensure that the current and future needs of the sector are incorporated.

Barry Neilson, CITB NI, Chief Executive said, “ By working together in partnership we are together focusing on the structure, format and standard of apprenticeship training to help identify future construction apprenticeship needs, raise the quality of apprenticeship programmes and to work better and more effectively with industry, training providers and awarding organisations.”

The apprenticeship frameworks will set out the required standards, preferred assessment approach and qualifications for each occupation with the new apprenticeship frameworks being introduced on a phased basis starting in 2018 with migration expected to be completed by 2020.
