Belfast’s Changing Waterfront – Site Visit

Exciting new developments are taking place on Belfast’s waterfront including the new £25m 4-star AC Hotel by Marriott Belfast, the first Marriott Hotel in Northern Ireland which is currently being built by Gilbert-Ash. Work is progressing rapidly and the project is due for completion in 2018. The new hotel, which is providing 180 construction jobs during its construction, will feature 188 bedrooms, a restaurant, a bar / lounge, fitness facilities and meeting rooms. It will also feature a signature restaurant by world-renowned Michelin starred chef Jean-Christophe Novelli. The hotel has an excellent location with great views over the water of Titanic Belfast and the Odyssey.

Members of the Women in Construction Network visited the site of the new hotel which is located within the City Quays development. The visit was organised by long-standing member and supporter of the network Maria Bradley, Gilbert-Ash.

Attendees were treated to a presentation by project co-ordinator Warren Copeland which outlined the construction work to date and the work still to be completed. The WICN members were then taken on a tour of the site, looking firstly at the exterior and then viewing the interior of the hotel including the area for the new restaurant and the various styles of bedroom.

As many members have seen the hotel in its various stages when driving over the M3 bridge, it was a great opportunity to get on to the site and see the project up-close. Members also enjoyed having the opportunity to network with other women working in the industry. Attendees included engineers, health and safety managers, quantity surveyors, HR managers and others. Companies participating included Farrans, HBS, Turkingtons, Graham-BAM, Morrow Group, and Arup. The WICN was also delighted to welcome representatives from the US Consulate and Belfast Harbour.

The Women in Construction Network NI runs a series of site visits and seminars throughout the year and provides an opportunity for women working in the industry (whether site or office-based) to get to know each other and to experience different elements of the construction industry. There is also a website which is updated monthly with external events which may be of interest to members.
