Annual Skills Statement

Part of CITB NI’s work is to understand the training needs of the Northern Ireland construction industry and to ensure that appropriate training is available for the industry to address these needs.
 
To determine the training needs, CITB NI carries out local and UK wide research with Northern Ireland employers and stakeholders, as well as monitoring research completed by other industry stakeholders and trade bodies. CITB NI engages with the industry through Board and Committee structures which consist of representatives from industry, education and trade unions. CITB NI also discusses training needs with employers at a wide range of events throughout the year.

The purpose of this annual construction industry skills statement publication is to bring together a synopsis of research findings and provide the reader with an overview of the current and future training needs of the Northern Ireland Construction Industry. The findings should be of interest to users and providers of training within Northern Ireland, including employers, employees, private and public training providers, trade bodies, Councils and MLAs.

 

The statement highlights that whilst the local construction industry is lagging behind the UK, construction employment to meet our domestic demand within NI is expected to grow at an annual average rate of 1.5% over the next 5 years, to around 65,900 by 2020 with an annual average of 1,750 new employees needed, providing planned levels of investment are realised. This does not account for the demand from NI contractors to service work outside NI.
 
75% of employers anticipate that their workforce will need to acquire new skills over the next 12 months. Whilst technical / trade specific (28%) and IT skills (21%) were the greatest areas of skills development required, legislation / regulations (19%), health and safety and first aid (17%), and green / ecological products and practices (12%) were all cited as areas of skills development for local construction employees.
 
CITB NI are addressing these areas of skills development and training needs amongst the industry and provide a range of training related services.
