National Working Group and Practitioner Group meetings

As the Sector Skills Council for the construction industry, ConstructionSkills is responsible for the development of national occupational standards (NOS) for the sector. National occupational standards are developed by current practitioners, who are members of the National Working Groups (NWG).

To encourage Northern Ireland employer and stakeholder involvement in National Occupational Standards (NOS) revisions we are looking to organise practitioner group meetings in Northern Ireland throughout the year. ConstructionSkills will provide lunch and expenses for participants.

ConstructionSkills will be reviewing the following suites of standards during 2011:

NWG NOS Reviews 2011
  • Construction Operations First National Working Group (NWG) meeting provisionally booked 08 June, yet to be confirmed.
  • Road Building First National Working Group (NWG) meeting provisionally booked 08 June, yet to be confirmed.
  • Highways Maintenance and Repair First NWG meeting provisionally booked 08 June, yet to be confirmed.
  • Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations First NWG meeting to be confirmed (24, 25 May or 02 June)
  • Trowel Occupations First NWG meeting to be confirmed (24, 25 May or 02 June)

Also the following Incremental Changes will be reviewed.
  • Roofing Occupations - Thatching (level 3 route to be moved to Heritage Skills)
  • Cladding Operations - Roof Sheeting and Cladding - Install Solar Panels (VR 298 to be included as additional for all routes)
  • Associated Industrial Services - Façade Cleaning - Heritage Skills (Awaiting decision from NWG)
  • 'No specific suite, potential new development' Removal of Hazardous and Non Hazardous Waste - Asbestos Survey (Meeting with instigator on 18 April possibly Asset Skills footprint)
  • Cladding Operations - Plant Ergonomic Manipulating Machines (Awaiting feedback from NWG)
  • Wood Occupations/Stonemasonry/Heritage Skills - Carving (Meeting scheduled for 16 May at Carthusian Court invitations sent to Wood Occupations and Stonemasonry NWG members)

We are looking to consult and listen to employers and stakeholders about changes to current industry practice and existing qualification structures, ensuring that any different conditions in Northern Ireland are clearly identified. To participate, current practitioners should be experienced in the field being covered and be able to provide the level of detail required to ensure that the Standards (NOS) reflects current industry practice. Representation from training providers and industry bodies are invited to attend as your continued support is valued and essential.

It is anticipated that we will have 1 meeting per occupation, which will take approx 1 day each. It is anticipated that these meetings will take place from late June to early August 2011.

To begin this process, we are looking for an indication that you would be interested in attending or would like to nominate someone to represent your organisation / member company. These practitioner group meetings will be in addition to the National Working Groups (NWG) that will be in place for these reviews. Local practitioner group discussions are reported back to the NWG.

Also please indicate if you would be interested in attending or would like to nominate someone to attend the National Working Groups which are usually held in London.
