SIOBHAN DIXON

‘Construction provides the variety of work that is hard to find in other industries. It allows the flexibility to plan and organize my day and workload. This industry enables you to progress your career at your own pace and allows the opportunity to change direction, while remaining in construction.’

CONTRACTS PLANNER
THE CARVILL GROUP

Siobhan joined the Carvill Group, a company that builds houses and apartments mostly in inner city Belfast, two years ago. The company also has projects in Dublin and Scotland and Siobhan travels to Glasgow once a fortnight to monitor their progress. Her job involves planning the most effective use of time, people and machinery and to schedule the construction work in a logical sequence. If the project falls behind time, eg: in the case of bad weather, she has to reschedule workload to ensure the contract is completed on time.

Since completing a Building Engineering & Management (Hons) Degree at the University of Ulster, Siobhan has worked for several construction companies as a Procurement Officer, a Health and Safety Manager and a Quality Assurance Officer before becoming a full time Contracts Planner.

When she became a Contracts Planner initially her first project was to assist in the contract planning of the high profile Laganside Courts development in the heart of Belfast. This was an amazing learning experience. Based on site full time her job included agreeing what work was to be completed each week and then monitoring site progress and workforce performance. She had to be able to work with all types of people at all levels from construction professionals to various teams of sub-contractors. Her outgoing personality and down to earth attitude was an advantage, as was her negotiation skills and ability to use initiative to solve problems.

Siobhan enjoys the wide and varied nature of her job. It offers her the opportunity to work outside as well as in the office.
